Missing saroops row: Setback for AAP as Banga MLA Sukhi relinquishes Cabinet rank
Amidst the raging controversy in the state regarding the 328 missing saroops of Shri Guru Granth Sahib, the Aam Admi Party has suffered a major setback in Doaba. Banga MLA Dr Sukhwinder Singh Sukhi today announced his resignation from his cabinet rank and post of Chairman, Punjab State Warehousing Corporation. He made the declaration formally in a Facebook post today.
The move comes days after the CM Bhagwant Mann announced that 169 of the missing 328 saroops had been found from a religious site in Banga, at Nawanshahr.
Speaking from the religious site of Rasokhana Sri Nabh Kanwal Raja, the place at the centre of the controversy, Sukhi said, "This site is not a place for politics for me."
Sukhi announced, "I resign from the rank and status of the Cabinet ministry and the position of chairman, bestowed on me by the state government. And I pray to God to grant me power that I may tell the truth to CM Bhagwant Mann and AAP leadership and help remove the misgivings (surrounding the issue)."
Notably, the religious site of Sri Nabh Kanwal Raja Sahib, alternately also referred to as 'Rasokhana' or 'Darbar' Sri Nabh Kanwal Raja Sahib, a revered holy place in Banga, has been the site of hectic political activity for the past many days amidst CM's statement. The place is being frequented by a SIT and various political leaders of SAD, Congress as well as AAP in the midst of the controversy.
Sukhi, who has been a regular at the site, denied any violation of Sikh maryada at the site. He said, "I have been coming for the past many days to seek blessings at the darbar. For the past some days, doubts have been projected regarding this place, regarding the bhog of Shri Akhand Sahib or the saroops, which have deeply hurt the sangat (devotees) of this place of which I'm also a part."
He added, "I had also come the night the FIR was filed and have come today again to pray that the Almighty gives us power and may instill fear in the minds of people who are propagating bad things about this place. This is not a place for politics for me."
An MLA with the Shiromani Akali Dal, Sukhi had joined AAP in August 2024. He had formerly also served the BSP
